Android Auto Troubleshooting Tips

If MapQuest isn't loading, appearing on your car’s screen, or providing audio navigation directions through Android Auto, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.

MapQuest Icon Is Missing from the Display

If you don't see the MapQuest app on your vehicle's dashboard launcher:

  1. Check Compatibility & Updates:

    • Ensure your phone is running Android 10.0 or higher (or has the Android Auto app installed if using Android 9).

    • Verify that you have updated to the latest version of MapQuest via the Google Play Store.

  2. Verify Launcher Settings:

    • On your phone, go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto.

    • Tap Customize launcher.

    • Make sure the checkbox next to MapQuest is checked. If unchecked, tap to select it so it appears on your car's screen.

  3. Check Location & App Permissions:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > MapQuest > Permissions.

    • Ensure Location permission is set to "Allow all the time" and Precise Location is toggled ON.

App Won't Connect, Freezes, or Shows a Black Screen

If MapQuest fails to start, crashes, or opens to a blank screen:

  1. Check Cable & USB Port:

    • If using a wired connection, ensure you are using a high-quality USB cable (preferably standard lengths under 3 feet) plugged directly into your car’s designated Android Auto port without extra adapters or hubs.

  2. Force Stop & Clear Cache:

    • Unplug your phone from the car.

    • Go to Settings > Apps > MapQuest.

    • Tap Force stop, then go to Storage & cache and tap Clear cache.

    • Do the same for the Android Auto app, then reconnect to your vehicle.

  3. Adjust Battery Optimization:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > MapQuest > App battery usage.

    • Set battery usage to Unrestricted to prevent your phone from putting the app to sleep while running in the background.

No Voice Navigation or Audio

If you can see the route on your screen but aren't hearing spoken turn-by-turn directions:

  1. Check Audio Settings in MapQuest:

    • Open MapQuest on your phone, go to Settings > Navigation audio, and ensure voice guidance is enabled and not muted.

  2. Check Vehicle Audio Channel & Volume:

    • Turn up your car’s main volume knob while a navigation instruction is actively playing. Android Auto separates voice navigation volume from media/music volume.

    • Ensure your car’s audio output is set to Android Auto rather than AM/FM radio or SiriusXM.

  3. Verify Bluetooth Media Routing:

    • Go to Settings > Connected devices > Bluetooth, tap your car's connection gear icon, and make sure Media audio is enabled.
