Remove unwanted ads or add-ons, try private browsing

If you ever see an advertisement on MapQuest that is overlapping or interfering with the features of our site and you don't see a way to close it, chances are it's actually coming from a third-party and not MapQuest.

Add-ons are small pieces of software that add new features or functionality to your web browser. Sometimes add-ons can cause problems that prevent web pages from displaying properly, cause intrusive advertisements to appear, or prevent you from using certain MapQuest features.

One easy action you can take to rule out add-on interference is to use a "private browsing" session to test MapQuest.com. Most modern browsers offer some form of private browsing, which loads webpages without loading any extensions or add-ons, cookies, or cached images or files so that everything will load fresh without interference from third-party sources.

To run Internet Explorer (versions 10 and 11) with no add-ons:

  1. Access the Charm Bar either by moving your mouse all the way to the right side of your screen, or by pressing the Windows Key and letter "C" simultaneously
  2. Select “Search”
  3. Type (or copy and paste) “C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe –extoff”
  4. Once the add-ons are disabled, please visit MapQuest.com to see if any issues persist

If running this "extensions off" version of Internet Explorer eliminates the problem you saw, click here to get specific instructions to fully disable add-ons in IE.

Chrome:

  1. Click the Chrome menu, which looks like three lines and is located on the browser toolbar
  2. Select “Tools”
  3. Select “Extensions”
  4. On the Extensions page, click “Disable” next to each extension
  5. Once the add-ons are disabled, please visit MapQuest.com to see if any issues persist 

Firefox:

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Click the Firefox menu button in the upper right-hand corner
  3. Click the Question Mark icon at the bottom of the Tools drop-down to Open the Help Menu
  4. Click “Restart with Add-ons Disabled” from the Help drop-down list
  5. Once the add-ons are disabled, please visit MapQuest.com to see if any issues persist

Safari:

  1. Click on Safari, located on the left of the menu bar
  2. Select “Preferences” from the drop down menu
  3. Select the Extensions icon
  4. Toggle the switch to the OFF position
  5. Once the add-ons are disabled, please visit MapQuest.com to see if any issues persist
