MapQuest’s advanced features were designed to take advantage of functionality built into current versions of the most popular web browsers.
Note: If you are getting any kind of JavaScript errors while trying to access the MapQuest Web site, refer to the Configuration Info links below to get the specific browser-specific steps that should fix these errors.

Configuring Internet Explorer 7 and 8 for Use with MapQuest
Note: If you have Internet Explorer 6, you may want to consider upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer or using Classic MapQuest. New MapQuest does not support Internet Explorer 6. Refer to … for instructions on how to upgrade your browser.
Current MapQuest features require browsers to have JavaScript enabled and to accept cookies.
This help topic describes how to enable JavaScript by resetting browser security to a predefined level. Once JavaScript is enabled, the browser must be configured to accept cookies.
Enable JavaScriptUse the following instructions to enable JavaScript in your Internet Explorer browser:
- In the upper right corner of your Internet Explorer browser, click Tools.
- Select Internet Options.Click the Security tab.
- In the Security level for this zone area, click the Custom Level button.
- In the Reset Custom Settings area, select Medium-high from the Reset to menu.
- Click Reset.
- Click Yes when asked Are you sure you want to change the settings for this zone?
- Click OK to close the Security Settings – Internet Zone window.
- Click OK to close the Internet Options window.
Enable Cookies
Use the following instructions to configure Internet Explorer to accept cookies:
- In the upper right corner of your Internet Explorer browser, click Tools.
- Select Internet Options.
- Click the Privacy tab.
- In the Settings area, click the Advanced button.
- In the Cookies area, clear the Override automatic cookie handling check box.
- Click OK to close the Advanced Privacy Settings window.
- Click OK to close the Internet Options window.
Disable Autofill
If your browser has autofill enabled, the directions form will automatically be populated with your previous search when you hit the Back button. Use the following steps to disable autofill:
- In the upper right corner of your Internet Explorer browser, click Tools.
- Select Internet Options.
- Click the Content tab.
- In the AutoComplete section, click Settings.
- Deselect the checkbox next to Forms.
- Click OK to close the AutoComplete Settings window.
- Click OK to close the Internet Options window.
Troubleshooting
If you have double-checked that all of the above settings in your browser are correct, and you are still experiencing problems, please try deleting all of your MapQuest cookies. Expired or corrupted cookies can sometimes prevent you from accessing a Web site, especially if you have recently updated your browser or if updates have recently been made to the Web site. To delete cookies in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
Note: Removing cookies will delete any recent searches and lists, locations, and routes that you have saved on MapQuest.com (without a My Maps account). Maps and lists saved with a My Maps account will not be removed.
- In the top menu of your Internet Explorer browser, click Tools.
- Select Delete Browsing History…
- In the Delete Browsing History window, select Cookies.
- Make sure no other categories are selected, unless you would like to delete information from these categories as well.
- Click Delete.

Image Loading and JavaScript
Use the following instructions to ensure proper image handling and enable to JavaScript in your Firefox 3.6.x browser:
- In the top menu bar of your Firefox 3.5 browser, click Tools.
- Select Options.
- Click Content.
- Select the Load Images Automatically check box.
- Select the Enable JavaScript check box.
- Click OK.
Enable Cookies
Use the following instructions to set up your Firefox 3.6.x browser to accept cookies:
- In the top menu bar of your Firefox 3.6.x browser, click Tools.
- Select Options.
- Click Privacy.
- Select the Accept Cookies from sites check box.
- In the Keep until drop-down menu select they expire.
- Click OK
