MapQuest won't talk to me

Voice navigation isn't working

We want to get you where you need to go safely, and if you're not hearing your voice navigation we can help with that!

The first things to check are your volume settings. Please double check that the app's volume settings are set to loud (settings located in the bottom right-hand corner of the navigation screen), and that your phone's general volume settings are not muted and are on high.

If your volume settings look correct, you may need to force shut down your MapQuest app and reload it. To do that:

  1. Tap the recent apps (two overlapping rectangles) button at the bottom of your phone
  2. Swipe up or tap on the X to close MapQuest
  3. Re-open the app

You can refer here for additional troubleshooting steps.

Using Bluetooth with the app

Bluetooth can be a bit tricky, so the first step in trying to hear voice navigation over a Bluetooth device is to make sure that it supports the A2DP protocol (also referred to as media). This is important to note, because although HFP (hands-free protocol) is a form of Bluetooth, A2DP is the only protocol we support. Next:

  1. Make sure the Bluetooth device is connected to your phone
  2. Turn your Bluetooth's output to either "Media" or "Bluetooth" (title may vary)
  3. Start your route in the MapQuest app

And if all goes to plan, you should be able to hear your turn-by-turn voice navigation!

Changing the App's voice

Please note: This is to troubleshoot your app's voice navigation, and not to change the accent of the voice.

Androids often have many other software packages you can install on your device, and Talk-to-speech (TTS) engines are some of them. TTS is the play-back voice that your Android device uses when reading words aloud and for voice navigation.

Although, some TTS engines can be a great addition, some can cause your MapQuest app to speak too fast or too slow. If that's the case, here is where to change those settings (steps may vary by device):

  1. Go to your device's Settings
  2. Tap Language & Input
  3. Tap Text-to-speech options
  4. Enable Google Text-to-speech engine
How to change volume settings in the app

It's not always easy having someone telling you what to do, but when it comes to safety, voice navigation is the exception! To change your app's Voice Guidance Volume:

  1. Tap the Get Directions button at the top right of your screen
  2. Enter your destination and tap Drive
  3. Tap Audio at the bottom right of the screen

And from here you can choose your sound level or even mute the voice navigation!
